Nelson, K. (2008). We Are the Ship NY: Hyperion

Summary:
Expertly illustrated by award-winning author and artist Kadir Nelson, this book gives readers a wonderful blend of narrative and visuals to help them understand the history of Negro League Baseball. All of the details, from where they played to who they played, provide a rich understanding of how things actually functioned within the Negro Leagues.

Notes:
Nelson gives an extensive list of his research in the creation of this book, making it an expert source on the subject. In addition to researching the text, Nelson also combed through historical pictures in order to create accurate paintings for this book, so the illustrations correctly reflect the historical trends.

Extension:
Discussion question: After reading this book, why do you think it is titled "We Are the Ship"? What is the "ship"? What does this ship metaphor describe?
