This Is Not My Hat

Klassen, J. (2012). This Is Not My Hat. Boston, MA: Candlewick.

Summary
This is a story about thievery and about taking back what is rightfully yours. In this story, we follow the reasoning of a thief fish that is trying to make off with a stolen hat. While he explains his case and tries to make his getaway, the witty illustrations tell us another story from fish whose hat was stolen. Will justice be served?

Notes
This Caldecott Winner has textured illustrations that pop against the dark black background of the water. Using different textures and layering, Klassen’s story is told as much through illustrations as it is through text. The entertaining pictures help to move the story along and are clever enough to be enjoyed by both young and older readers alike.

Extension
Writing prompt: Write a dialogue between the thief and the victim. Have the thief explain why he took the hat. Incorporate the characterization that you saw through the text and illustrations in this book.
