Welcome

The following are reviews of some of my favorite children's books. Many of them have won prestigious awards, and all of them ignite the imagination like a good book should. I hope that you can enjoy these books just as much as I have!

The Three Pigs

Wiesner, D. (2001). The Three Pigs. NY: Clarion.

Summary

This unique spin on the classic story of the three little pigs gives the poor piggies a chance to change their story- and that they do. As these pigs test out the waters of different stories, they make friends along the way and together decide to return to and rewrite their own story.

Notes
The composition of these pages is a key element to helping the reader understand what is happening in the story without explaining it in the text. Using different textures and styles to illustrate different stories, the illustrations allow even young readers to recognize when the characters have moved “in” or “out” of a story. The use of white space is also key to understanding where a character is at any given time.

Extension
Essay prompt: The three little pigs chose to get out of a bad situation with the wolf and rewrite their story for the better. Write about a time in your life when you made a decision that changed your story.
