Welcome

The following are reviews of some of my favorite children's books. Many of them have won prestigious awards, and all of them ignite the imagination like a good book should. I hope that you can enjoy these books just as much as I have!

It's a Book

Smith, L. (2011). It’s a Book. NY: Roaring Brook

Summary
This book depicts a conversation between a character who is quietly reading and his counterpart who does not understand the concept of an old-fashioned book. He asks many questions that reflect the expectations of technology upon books.

This satirical story shows how an overdependence on technology can take away the ability to enjoy the simplicity of reading.

Notes
The theme of this book is obvious from the interaction between characters. It portrays the inability of our society to be still, to be quiet, and to enjoy the simple act of reading. Without coming across as too moralistic, this book takes a light and humorous approach to exploring the trend of technology taking over every facet of life, which many think is the downfall of the new generation. This book, thought appearing as a simple child’s book, is actually great prompt for older students to engage in a frank discussion about the impact of technology on modern life.

Extension
Discussion Questions:
1. How far fetched is it that a character in this book does not know what a book is?
2. Which is more commonplace in our lives - physical books or technology? Does this change if the question is focused on leisure? School? Work?
3. How does technology help us?
4. How does technology handicap us?
