Welcome

The following are reviews of some of my favorite children's books. Many of them have won prestigious awards, and all of them ignite the imagination like a good book should. I hope that you can enjoy these books just as much as I have!

Mirror, Mirror

Singer, M. (2010). Mirror, Mirror. NY: Dutton.

Summary
This picture book is a compilation of poems about beloved fairy tales. Each poem is presented twice with the same arrangement of words, but the order of the lines is reversed. This unique presentation shows how easily language can be manipulated. Poems about the same fairy tale often contradict each other or show different perspectives when read in opposite order.

Notes
The pictures that accompany the poems really add a deeper level of meaning to the text, especially for young readers. Just as the two poems highlight different perspectives of the same story, the illustration does the same. Using one overarching shape, the illustrations are divided in half to create a visual for each of the poems. This unique style is a creative and fresh approach to poetry and fairy tales that gets young children excited to learn about manipulating language and art.

Extension
These poems often told the same story from two different perspectives, resulting in two very different meanings. Write a paragraph about something that happened to you today. Then, think about who else was involved in your story. Now write a paragraph explaining the exact same event from this other person's perspective.
