Welcome

The following are reviews of some of my favorite children's books. Many of them have won prestigious awards, and all of them ignite the imagination like a good book should. I hope that you can enjoy these books just as much as I have!

Hitler Youth

Bartoletti, S. (2005). Hitler Youth. NY: Scholastic.

Summary
Though rarely mentioned in discussions of history, the Hitler Youth, comprised of dedicated young Nazi boys and girls, was an important support system that helped Hitler rise to power. This informational book takes a look at the war from their perspective with first-hand accounts that depict determination towards their cause, frustration towards their government, and the lack of knowledge they had about what their leader was actually doing.

Notes
This book is filled with information yet written in a story-like way that promotes interest in reluctant readers. The heavy text, large vocabulary, and horrific subject matter make this a book suited best for older readers. These pages include an abundance of real photographs to give readers images of what things really looked like at this time in history.

Extension
Discussion and writing activity: Before reading this book, write a paragraph stating your opinion about what you think the Hitler Youth were like. After reading this book, write a paragraph on what you learned about these young men and women. Discuss if/how your perception changed after reading about these people.
