Notes
This story is an old Cuban folktale and the illustrations do a wonderful job of depicting this with settings that include a garden and lamppost on a Havana city street. Filled with warm, rich colors, the reader almost feels as if they are on the hot streets of Cuba along with the characters. The detailed illustrations help the reader to visualize everything happening as the plot progresses and understand the characterization at an even deeper level.
Extension
Writing prompt: Pretend that you are Martina and your best cockroach friend is ready to get married. Write her a letter explaining why it is important that she do the coffee test with every potential suitor. Include "evidence" from the book.
