Creech, S. (2001).
Love that dog. NY: HarperCollins.
Summary:
This book is a compilation of journal entries from Jack, a boy who thinks poetry is for girls but eventually learns that poetry can be for anyone- even him! His poems show his struggle to find words to talk about his dog, and demonstrate how he overcome his self-doubt in order to share his poetry and even reach out to his favorite author.
Notes:
This book is written in verse. It is great for showing students how different arrangements of words can be poetry, and how easy poetry can be to create. The book also includes an index of the poems mentioned or modeled, so that would be an excellent teaching tool as teachers could read those poems, compare them to the models provided, and have students model their own poems after the originals.
Extension:
Read through the poems at the end of the book. Select your favorite and write a paragraph explaining what you like about the poem. Next, model the original poem to create your own.
