Welcome

The following are reviews of some of my favorite children's books. Many of them have won prestigious awards, and all of them ignite the imagination like a good book should. I hope that you can enjoy these books just as much as I have!

Apples and Robins

Felix, L. (2016). Apples and Robins. San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books.

Summary
This picture book tells its story with pictures and shapes as much as words. Using different shapes cut out on the pages to create new images, Felix tells a simple story about apples, birds, and nature. The creative use of shapes will keep readers of all ages entertained.

Notes
This book is a great launching point for discussion on design, with a lot of intentional white space and simplistic graphics that pop. It can also be used for teaching or identifying shapes, or talking about aspects of nature such as the lifecycle of an apple tree or robin.

Extension
Young students learning about shapes might especially enjoy this story. After reading the story, students could be given cut out shapes and asked to create their own pictures, just like in the book.
