Welcome

The following are reviews of some of my favorite children's books. Many of them have won prestigious awards, and all of them ignite the imagination like a good book should. I hope that you can enjoy these books just as much as I have!

Wonderstruck

Selznick, B. (2007). Wonderstruck. NY: Scholastic.

Summary:
This is the story about a Ben, who has recently lost his mother and has never known his father. He sets out on a mission, with only a handful of clues and a major handicap, to find his father in the city of New York. He makes friends along the way, and discovers a lot about himself and his unknown family in this touching story.

Notes:
This book has a very unique style because the illustrations tell their own story, without the use of words. This can be a great tool to teach about ways to communicate a story without words. This book also contains powerful themes about finding oneself and discovering a hidden family history, which resonates with many young people and might make this book a good choice for students struggling with similar issues.

Extension:
Ben wanted to know who his father was, but he never got that information from his mother. Pretend that she wrote him a letter before she died. Write a letter to Ben from his mom that explains why she kept his father a secret and describes what he was like. Make sure that your letter reflects her personality as described in the novel.
