The Hate U Give

Citation:
Thomas, A. (2017). The Hate U Give. NY: Balzer + Bray.

Summary:
After witnessing the brutal shooting of a childhood friend, Starr Carter’s life is turned upside down. Attending a private school 45 minutes away, yet living in a ghetto, Starr was unsure how to balance her seemingly two different lives. Now, she is even more unsure. In the wake of Khalil’s death, Starr watches the national media circus fly accusations towards her departed friend. She also sees her community rally around to protest the injustice as it all. Suddenly, Starr’s life as she knows it and even her physical safety are at stake as she navigates what to say or not say about the tragic night that everything changed.

Response:
The narrator of this novel, Starr Carter, tells her story with real honesty that readers can relate to. I felt that this book is deeply meaningful for a variety of audiences. It opened my eyes to the constant racism and injustices that go on in everyday life. It is also relatable for any reader who has experienced racism, whether they are African American or another race.
This book was inspired by the unwarranted shooting of African American man by a white policeman in Jackson, Mississippi in 2009. A study and discussion of the true events that inspired this novel, plus the multitude of similar events that have occurred in recent years, would complement this novel in book groups and classrooms.

Textbook Connections:
Genre: fiction
Topics include racism, police brutality, unwarranted violence, social injustice, and racial profiling
